Messages
An exchange of information
Consisting of 2 components:
1. Content (ex: ‘‘im not angry’’= not angry)
2. Metamessage - message within the message (ex: ‘’ I”M NOT ANGRY=i’m angry): tone of voice, non verbals
can cause sproblems

Gazing
Looking at someone can communicate interest and affection.
But a lot of looking can also communicate dominance
and status.
the visual dominance ratio (VDR) = look-speak/look-listen
High-status individuals tend to use a higher visual dominance ratio (VDR) than people of lowerstatus
Conversational style
an individual’s unique way to shape messages
- Degree of directness(direct vs indirect) - power vs relational
* Degree of involvement (of
others) ( a lot vs less)
ex:’‘let me tell you about me’’

Level of congruity of
messages (straightfoward vs obligious). ex: do what you want -
How messages are framed
-more likely bring an umbrella with rain vs non-rain (frame in the positive)
