Types of Guidance Flashcards
What are the 4 types of guidance?
Verbal
Visual
Manual
Mechanical
What does a coach need to be aware of when delivering verbal guidance?
-Don’t speak for too long- performers may have short attention span
-Some movements simply cannot be explained - stick to visual guidance
-Direct verbal guidance is better in early stages to ensure that the learner has a clear idea of what needs to be done
-Questioning techniques can encourage personal development and develop confidence if handled in the right way
What is verbal guidance?
-Describing and explaining an action and how to preform it
-Instructions, coaching points, encouragement
-Can create an image - breaststroke arms ( crocodile, monkey, mouse)
What are the advantages of verbal guidance?
-good for conveying detail/ technical knowledge
-directs attention to important cues
-gives information for improving performance
-gives confidence (reinforcement)
-can refine skills during performance
-identifying and correcting errors
What are the disadvantages of verbal guidance?
-Information overload- performer distracted or confused
-Inaccurate- skills not developed efficiently
-Struggle to visualise what is being said
-Ineffective with beginners
What is visual guidance?
-The use of a demonstration to help the learner understand what is needed
-Good during the cognitive stage for learners to image what is needed of them
-Can include demonstration, videos, charts or other visual aids
What are the advantages of visual guidance?
-Can find it easy to create a mental picture of what is required
-Enable the skill to be seen in different stages to make it easier to learn and develop
-Encourages observational learning by drawing attention to important cues
-Allow advance performers to analyse own performance
-Enables cueing
-Understanding of requirements
-Observational learning- role models motivate
what are the disadvantages of visual guidance?
-Demonstration could be incorrect = learn bad habits, hinder skill development
-May not be able to show accurate demonstration
-Maybe too quick for performer to follow it effectively
-Not good for long skills with too much information
-Unclear
What is manual guidance?
-Hands on
-Coach, holding and physically manipulating the body of the learner to induce the correct pattern of movement
What are the advantages of manual guidance?
-Eliminate fear
-Give the performer, a sense of safety
-Increase confidence
-Allow kinaesthesis
-Develop spatial awareness and timing
-Isolate an important aspect of a skill
what are the disadvantages of manual guidance?
-Over reliance, dependency
-Restrictive so performer has a lack of control
-Feel of movement may not be truly representative
What is mechanical guidance?
The use of a physical aid to help shape the skill
What are the advantages of mechanical guidance?
-Increase confidence
-Ensure safety
-Develop spatial awareness and timing
-Isolate an important aspect of a skill
what are the disadvantages of mechanical guidance?
-Needs to be removed quickly to prevent overreliance and dependency
-movement may not be truly representative - false sense of kinaesthesis
-Designed to eliminate errors does not experience mistakes
