what was langes PROCEDURE

A

investigated 13 MZ twins and 17 DZ twins for their concordance rate for time spent in prison

Q

what was langes FINDINGS

A
  • 10 of the 13 (77%) MZ twins had both served time in prison
  • only 2 of the 17 (12%) DZ twins had both served time in prison

Q

what was christiansens PROCEDURE

A

investigated 3586 twin pairs (male and female) born in denmark between 1881 and 1910 for their concordance rate for criminal behaviour

Q

what where christiansen’s CONCLUSION

A

identical twins male and female are more likely to commit a crime if the other twin commits a crime - makes are more likely to commit a crime if the other identical twin commits a crime than females

Q

STRENGTH: how can the other study’s be used as a strength

A

lange and christiansen:
suggest for identical twins offending behaviour is also identical like other factors

Q

STRENGTH:what did ishkawa and raine find, link to GRAVE

A

higher concordance rate for identical then non identical twins

Q

WEAKNESSES: what are some criticisms of the studies

A
  1. LANGE: small sample size, not generalisable
2.CHRISTIANSEN: could only be generalised to twins in denmark
  2. FOR BOTH STUDIES: if genes where only cause of criminality, concordance rate would be 100%
17
Q

WEAKNESS: what is a weakness of early studies such as lange, link to GRAVE

A

no way of knowing for certain if twins where in fact genetically identical as DNA testing didn’t exist
lacks validity: can’t be truly scientific as it wasn’t tested/controlled for

18
Q

WEAKNESS: why may it not all be down to genetics

A

twins also share:
- same homes, school, friends and hobbies
- parents treat identical twins more alike then they do non identical
therefore their shared environments might cause similarities in their criminal behaviour not identical genes
