hans eysenck Flashcards
what theory is it
individualistic and psychological
what did hans eysenck do
- carried out questionnaire on 700 soldiers being treated for a neurotic illness
- concluded that their answers suggested different personality traits
- he therefore proposed that different personality traits are more likely to commit crimes
why are certain personality traits more likely to commit crime
because they
- crave excitement
- are slow to learn that crime has serious negative consequences
what personality traits are more likely to commit crime
- extroversion
- neuroticism
- psychoticism
how does eysencks theory explain criminality
-people who have PEN personality’s are more likely to commit crime as they struggle to learn to control immature impulses
-criminals are more likely to be impulsive, thrill seeking individuals who are unable to accept/ understand rules of society
STRENGTH: how can it being quantitive data be a strength, link to GRAVE
it can be tested and so is scientific and a quarionnaire was used on 700 soldiers. this is a strength because
- it can be replicated
- checks to see the reliability of the result
STRENGTH: what did DeYoung, McGurk and McDougall fimd
DeYoung: that those who score high on eysencks personality test in neuroticism and extroversion have links to criminality
McGurk and McDougall: they studied juvenile offenders and non juvenile and found that majority had high PEN traits
STRENGTH: how can early interventions be a strength, link to GRAVE
these where based on parenting or early treatment for people with these personality traits which may help to reduce crime this is a strength because it has real world application
WEAKNESS: what did farrington do
examined a range of studies and found that prisoners are neurotic and psychotic but not extroverted disproves his theory for example:
jeff dahmer- introvert
WEAKNESS: how can eysencks questionnaires relying on self report measure be a weakness
it may result in biased or false answers
WEAKNESS: what does this theory not consider
it suggests that personality is fixed and it won’t change over time
