labelling and the self fulfilling prophecy Flashcards
what theory is it
interactionist
what does elmer’s argue
by labelling certain people as deviant, society encourages them to be a deviant
who distinguished primary and secondary deviant
lemert
describe primary deviance
- crimes that haven’t been caught
-insignificant acts that haven’t been publicly labelled/caught
what is an example of primary deviance
stealing stationary from work as there isn’t any consequence to the action as long as no one finds out
what is master status/secondary deviance
- being + caught and labelled
- result of societal reaction
- being stigmatised shamed and excluded
what is secondary deviance likely to provoke
further hostile reactions from society and reinforce the deviants outsider status (reject from society)
this can lead to more devaince
what is a deviant career
forced into the company of other criminals
what does the criminal behaviour become
the master status through commiting acts of secondary deviance meaning other labels become irrelevant
what does lemert argue about master status
- that when we assign master status to individuals they are pushed out of mainstream society and towards others with same statuses
- forming criminal subcultures
- fall into life of crime as dont belong anywhere else
what does lemert say in turn they do
in turn they self fulfil their status and continue to commit secondary deviance as they wont be able to loose it for the perception of others
what does the attempt to control deviance lead to
a large crackdown and therefore their is an increase in deviant acts rather than decreasing it
what is an example of a large crackdown
cohens example of mods and rockers:
- increase attempts to control riots
- over policing
- increased the labels in media
- crime is then amplified as others who identify with the label join
