aversion therapy Flashcards
what type of offenders does it focus on
sex offenders
what does it involve
the offender thinking of sexual fantasies - a strongly aversive stimulus is then administer (electric shock) this is repeated until the offender associates this with a negative consequence
what does this theory link to and how
EYSENCK:
pen personalities don’t respond well to operant conditioning as they are impulsive therefore this shapes their instincts to avoid pain, which is what they use when they commit crime
CASE STUDY: aversion therapy being used to ‘cure’ homosexuals
PETER PRICE:
- given electric shocks and drugs to make him sick
- thought he was going to die
- doctors at the time had more power than authorities therefore there were no guidelines to protect them
STRENGTH: how can this be supported
THERE ARE NO STRENGTHS:
in the exam state this and then move onto doing 2 weaknesses
WEAKNESS: how is it unethical
it has been misued to ‘treat homosexuals’ - showing them photos of naked men whilst being shocked/made sick
WEAKNESS: what does it abuse
human rights: some have died/suffer from PTSD due to it
WEAKNESS: how is it a weakness it reducing reoffending
because it doesn’t address the root cause of the offending, there is no detailed reason for reoffending so we cant stop others from doing it but just pure punishment
