psychoanalysis Flashcards
who founded this policy
freud
what does this involve
the patient verbalising their thoughts (talking therapy)
what does it aim to access
the unconscious, repressed thoughts which are believed to lead to criminality - buried through childhood trauma
what is free association
free talking, so the patient talks about whatever enters the mind - the reason that causes the crime will come to mind
STRENGTH: how does it work as well as other therapy treatments
for example cognitive behaviour therapy as they both reduce reoffending as you know what is causing the offending
STRENGTH: what did Eysenck find
44% of neurotic patients responded well to it
WEAKNESS: what did blackburn find
there are few positive cases of classic psychoanalysis as a treatment for offenders
WEAKNESS: how is it unethical
there is a power in balance between the therapist and the client
WEAKNESS: what could it discover
painful memories that have deliberately been repressed - PTSD
