cognitive theories - kohlburg as they sate that our cognitions shape our behaviour including our offending behaviour
what do offenders have that lead them to offend
distorted cognitions as they are in a pre moral state of immaturity
what is a pre moral state of immaturity
they haven’t developed morals and values - they cannot proccess it and only see the reward

- dealing with negative thoughts by giving you skills and coping mechanisms

engage with it as they give homework, have to test the techniques and skills which may not work for criminals

they have found that those completing the course may be 25% likely to re convict then other

they are different programmes that can be based of CBT but tailored to specific needs BBR
STRENGTH: how has it got the potential to change behaviour
it has the potential to change behaviour long term as it focuses on self help techniques to not reoffend in the future
WEAKNESS: what does it require of the participant
offenders need to be motivated to complete the programme and to change - they must be active in therapy and to complete work outside of it
