What is TRANSFER?
When the learning of a skill influences another skill.
What are the 5 types of TRANSFER?
- positive
- negative
- proactive
- retroactive
- bilateral
What is POSITIVE TRANSFER? [5]
Where the learning of one skill enhances/helps the learning of another. Best with previous knowledge Develops correct motor programme Motivational Saves time
What is an example of POSITIVE TRANSFER?
e.g. Football kick -> conversion in rugby
What is NEGATIVE TRANSFER?
This is when the learning of a skill hinders the learning of another.
Demotivating
Can hinder stimulus response compatibility
Wastes time
What is an example of NEGATIVE TRANSFER?
e.g. Batting in cricket -> gold swing
What is PROACTIVE TRANSFER?
This is where the learning of a skill in the past affects a currently learnt skill.
Past -> Future
Can be positive or negative
Don’t teach conflicting skills together
What is an example of PROACTIVE TRANSFER?
e.g. Childhood taught to do an over arm throw -> javelin throw in secondary school
What is RETROACTIVE TRANSFER?
Where the learning of a skill in the present effects a previously learnt skill.
Past
What is an example of RETROACTIVE TRANSFER?
Badmington -> tennis
Flexible and firm wrist
What is BILATERAL TRANSFER?
Where the performer transfers the performance of a skill from one side of the body to the other.
What is an example of BILATERAL TRANSFER?
e.g. Tennis Player doesn’t need to use backhand so can use more of the court
Valuable in some games
How can a coach encourage POSITIVE TRANSFER? [4]
- highlight similar elements
- visual guidance (demonstrations)
- ensure practise is similar to the real game
- ensure the skull that is transferred is well grooved
How can coaches avoid negative transfer? [4]
- don’t coach skills with potential negative transfer together
- highlight potential problems
- negative reinforcement - punishment - break unwanted S-R bonds
