THEORIES Flashcards
What is TRAIT THEORY? [4]
Eysenck suggests personality is innate, therefore predictable and stable (genetically determined)
Type A: highly competitive, inpatient, high stress, intolerant
Type B: not competitive, patient, tolerant, low stress
What is Social Learning Theory? (P) [4]
Personality is built through learning/copying/observing others - “significant others”
But dismissed roles of genes
What is the interactionist theory for personality? [4]
Combination of innate and environment
HOLLANDER believed in CIRCLE of 3 cores :
1-Phycological
2-typical responses
3-role related behaviour
B= f(PxE)
What is the credulous theory? [4]
Believes there’s a connection between personality and participation in sport
ICEBERG PROFILE
What is Somatic arousal?
E.g. Increase in HR
SWEATING
What is cognitive arousal?
E.g. Worry
Apprehension
What is drive theory? [4]
Quality of performance is proportional to increase in arousal
Increase in arousal = more likely to get a dominant response
What is Inverted U Theory? [4]
As arousal increases so does performance up to a certain point
Optimum Quality of performance = moderate level of arousal - beyond this point performance drops
Optimum arousal = best concentration
What is Catastrophe theory? [4]
Dramatic decline in performance
Caused by interaction of somatic and cognitive anxiety
What is aggression?
Intent to harm outside the rules of the game
