Can be seen as a ‘box ticking’ exercise
Not necessarily related to the job role
What is on the job training
On the job training is the process of educating employees at their place of work - Once people have started, they’ll probably do some sort of on the job training to enable them to get as much knowledge as possible for the job role.
Pros of on the job training
Staff remain productive (Maybe you’re on the tills serving a customer, being watched by a manager to see how you can improve etc)
Directly relates to the job role
Delivered internally, so specific to an organisation’s needs
Relatively low costs - As you don’t have to pay an external person to come and do the training
Helps to build confidence - As it’s directly related to their day to day role
Cons Of On The Job Training
Internal trainers may lack specialist skills
Possibility of bad habits being passed on
What is off the job training
Off the job training is the process of educating employees away from their familiar workplace so that they’re better able to perform their role.
An example could be when a teacher has a day out of the school, to have teacher training day. It’s a form of training that is outside of the usual place of work (the school) so therefore it is off the job training
Pros Of Off The Job Training
Usually conducted by specialists
Time away from workplace allows for reflection and insight (As you are able to focus solely on the training ahead of you, instead of being distracted by things that happen in your usual place of work)
Possibility of specialists facilities and equipment - Allows for a better training experience
Can be awarded with qualifications
