What is hackman and oldman’s model of job design

A

Hackman and Oldman’s model of job design that identifies the characteristics of a job that is likely to lead to high performance (measured through things like labour productivity, cost per unit, labour turnover) and job satisfaction.

In other words Hackman and Oldman have put together a model that they say these are the characteristics job, a good job is going to lead these outcomes

A

Skill variety - Roles that enable employees to demonstrate a variety of skills and talents - A well designed job will enable employees to show a variety of skills and talents (Teacher example: Presentation, communication, organisation)

What is task identity

A

Task identity - Roles that involve a variety of clearly delegated tasks - A good job will have really specific tasks (Teacher example: Individual lessons - The teacher needs to work out how they will educate students from beginning to end - also parents evenings, and righting reports)

A

Task significance - Tasks create value or are of importance to colleagues, customers, or other stakeholders (Teacher example: Are the lessons that are taught significance? Do they help students achieve a certain grade? Help them to progress to have successful careers)

What is autonomy

A

Autonomy - The degree to which employees get to decide how to undertake the role and manage their workload (Teacher example: Teachers can’t pick their own hours, but there’s quite a lot of freedom due to the fact that teachers get to decide how to best deliver the class.

A

Feedback - Staff have their performance reviewed with the aim of improving it (Teacher example - Teacher observations are put in place so that teachers performance can be reviewed, so that students can get the most out of their education)
