REDEPLOYMENT AND REDUNDANCY Flashcards
What is redeployment
Redeployment is the process recognizing members of the workforce so they are moved from one role to another within the organisation.
What can redepolyment occur
A branch is closed (if a supermarket closes down one of it’s branches, you’ll move those valuable staff member that know how to stack shelves and operate the tills to a new branch)
One unit has excess employees, and another area has a shortage
Greater returns can be earned by undertaking a different activity (within apple they identified that their way a greater demand for the iphone instead of the ipod, so Apple redeployed some their staff that were marketing and manufacturing the ipod to manufacturing and marketing the iphone
Workers are trained with new skills, and are believed that they would be more productive in a different area in the business
What are the advantages of redeployment
Retain workers skills and experience within the organisation (instead of getting rid of old staff, and getting new ones in to retrain etc)
Increase labour productivity (Example: moving people from producing something in low demand, to producing something that’s in high demand)
Link to job security - As the employee is being moved to a different position in the business, and haven’t been let go - So that will make them feel like they’re (Can be linked to Maslow)
What are the disadvantages of redepolyment
Training requirements
Break up existing work groups
What is redundancy
Redundancy means when an employee loses their job because their role no longer exists
What is the typical process of redundancy
Management restructure (Jobs are identifies that can be merged, or jobs that are no longer needed)
Legal obligation for management to investigate/ offer redeployment opportunities
If redeployment isn’t possible, the company may start offering voluntary redundancies/ alternative working parties like part time etc
If that doesn’t happen then there may be compulsory redundancies
People receive a redundancy package
What are advantages of redundancy
Reduces a business’s wage costs
Can increase labour productivity (For example, stopping manufacturing of a low demanded product)
What are disadvantages to redundancy
Impact on morale of remaining staff (If their co workers that they enjoy being around are leaving the organisation, then that could not only not feel as happy around the workplace, but also cause them to have anxiety of them being made redundant)
Negative publicity
