What are the benefits of Training?
Increased productivity as staff are better skilled.
Improved quality of finished product.
Fewer accidents will occur.
Greater job satisfaction and motivation for employees.
What are the costs of Training?
Financial cost of training can be high as off the job training may need to be paid for.
Once trained, staff may leave for better paid jobs.
Productivity may decrease as staff are trained and are taken away from their jobs for training.
What are the 3 types of Training?
Induction (Internal)
On-the-job (Internal)
Off-the-job (External)
What is Induction?
This is training given to new employees to cover aspects such as health and safety procedures, organisational policies and overview of facilities.
What are the benefits of Induction Training?
Ensures new employee are following the expected policies/guidelines.
Allows new employees to settle in before the pressure of the job starts.
What are the costs of Induction Training?
For highly complex jobs it may take weeks before the employees is ready to start working on their own.
May use up management time as new employee is shown around/introduced to others.
What is On-the-job?
This is training carried out within the workplace whilst the employee is performing their normal duties.
What are the benefits of On-the-job Training?
Employees are trained using their normal equipment.
Training is tailored the business needs and objectives.
Is less expensive than off-the-job as courses don’t need to be paid for.
What are the costs of On-the-job Training?
Existing workers may not pass on best techniques.
Productivity may decrease whilst training takes place if experienced members of staff and/or equipment is being used for training purposes.
What is Off-the-job?
This is training that occurs outside the workplace, eg at college or training centre.
What are the benefits of Off-the-job Training?
Training is provided by experienced professionals/experts.
Qualifications can be gained by employees.
Allows training to take place away from the main function of the business meaning there are fewer distractions.
What are the costs of Off-the-job?
Other staff need to cover the work of an employee who is sent on a course.
Is more expensive than On-the-job due to having to paid for courses/professionals/qualifications.
The training course may not use the same equipment as the businesses uses.

What is an Apprenticeship?
Employees (often at the start of their career) learning skills from experienced staff whilst they work on the job (eg plumber, mechanic).
What is a Job Rotation?
Employees learn the skills of the variety of roles within the organisation (leads to multi-tasking).
