Tour of The Cell Flashcards
What is the function of proteins?
They perform most cell functions
What are the functions of carbohydrates?
They provide chemical energy support and identity.
What is the function of a plasma membrane?
Serves as a selectivitypermeable membrane
What domain are bacteria and archaea under?
Prokaryote
What domain is eukarya under?
Eukaryotes
What is the difference between the prokaryotic and eukaryotic cell?
The morphology
What is the basic cell structurecomposed of?
Plasma membrane, DNA and cytoplasm
What are the parts of the prokaryotic cell?
Flagella, nuclei, ribosomes, cell wall, capsules
What do plasmids contain?
Independent genes
What do prokaryotes have in the cytoplasm?
Cellular “scaffolding”|”skeleton”
What does the prokaryotic plasma membrane separate?
Life from non-life
Why do large sizes of eukaryotic cells have a downside?
The volume of the cells tend to increase and end up being larger than the surface area but the surface area has to be larger in order to be metabolically active, absorb nutrients and eliminate waste.
What are the exception to the larger surface area rule?
Egg cells and giant squid nerve cells
What are some differences between prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells?
Eukaryotic cells are generally larger, prokaryotic chromosomes are in loosely defined nuclei, and eukaryotic cells have a larger number of distinct organelles.
What are the parts of the eukaryotic cells?
Plasma membrane, nucleus and cytoplasm
