Organic Compounds Flashcards
What are polymers made of? (General)
Polymers are made up of monomers and the polymers form macromolecules
What are monomers?
Small organic compounds used for building blocks of polymers. Connects with condensation reaction
What are polymers? (General)
Long molecules of monomers, many similar blocks linked by covalent bonds
What are macromolecules?
Giant molecules made up of for more polymers bonded
How are these polymers then disassembled?
They are disassembled by hydrolysis/ the addition of water molecules.
What are the 4 classes of life’s organic molecules?
Proteins, carbohydrates, nucleic acids and lipids
What are the most abundant and versatile macromolecules?
Proteins
How many amino acids are there?
20
What does “proteios” mean?
First/primary
What perctange of cells is proteins?
50% of dry weight
What elements do protein contain?
Carbon, hydrogen nitrogen, oxygen and sulfur
What is the structure of amino acids?
Central Carbon, amino group, carbonyl group and an r group. This gives each acid their unique chemical properties
