Functional Groups Flashcards
What are functional groups?
These are parts of organic molecules that are involved in chemical reactions and give them their distinctive properties and behavior.
What do functional groups affect, and what does this cause?
Functional groups affect reactivity, making hydrocarbons hydrophilic and increasing the solubility of water
What functional group has organic compounds with OH?
Hydroxyl
What functional group has oxygen double bonded with carbon?
Carbonyl
What functional group has carbon double bonded to oxygen and single bonded to hydroxide?
Carboxyl
What functional group is mostly comprised of organic compounds with OH sending in -ol
Hydroxyl
What functional group has sulfur bonded to hydrogen?
Sulfhydrl
What functional group has lots of oxygen, so lots of electronegative charge?
Phosphate
What is it called if carbon is double bonded with oxygen at the end of a diagram?
Aldehyde
What is it called if carbon is double bonded with oxygen at the middle of the diagram?
Ketone
What type of acids are commonly involved with the carboxyl functional group?
Fatty acids and amino acids
What functional group has nitrogen attached to 2 hydrogen?
Amino
What functional group has phosphate bonded to 4 oxygen?
Phosphates organic phosphate)
What does the sulfhydrl functional group do?
Stabilizes the structure of proteins
What are the six main functional groups?
Carbonyls, carboxyls, aminos, phosphates, sulfhydryls and hydroxyls
