Photosynthesis Flashcards
What are the products and reactants of photosynthesis?
The reactants are carbon dioxide, water and light energy while the products are sugar and oxygen
Where do light reactions occur?
In the thylakoid
What do primary products of light reactions produce in photosystem ll?
They produce oxygen by splitting water
What are the products created in the light reactions and used in the Calvin cycle?
ATP and NADPH
Where does the Calvin cycle occur?
In the stroma
What is the primary function of the Calvin cycle?
To make simple sugars
Where does the light that comes into photosystem 2 stay in?
The antenna complex
What does photosystem 2 do in relation to photosystem1?
Electrons from photosystem 2 are donated to photosystem 1
How is ATP produced in the photosystem?
Via proton -motive force
What enzyme hooks carbon dioxide up with RUBP?
Rubisco
What are the 3 main steps of the Calvin cycle?
Carbon fixation , reduction and regeneration of RUBP
What does rubisco do to carbon? (strip)
It takes carbon, strips it and attaches it do a 5-carbon compound. This is unstable and the compound breaks down
W hat sugar is an acceptor of carbon?
RUBP
What do c4 plants use instead of rubisco?
An enzyme called pep carboxylase
Why does pep carboxylase work for c4 plants?
Because it has a high affinity of carbon dioxide at high levels
Where does carbon dioxide fix into, to be pul away later into the Calvin cycle?
Carbon dioxide is fixed into malate, to be put away later into the Calvin cycle
When do cam plants store carbon dioxide and open their stomata?
At night storing in an acid
When do cam plants release their carbon dioxide and close their stomates?
During the day
How is water and oxygen cycled in photosynthesis?
Photosynthesis (from photosystem 2 to photosystem 1) uses water as an electron donor and releases Oxygen as a product.
How is carbon dioxide cycled between photosynthesis?
Photosynthesis uses carbon dioxide as a substrate to fix and reduce it to a sugar
What would happen if rubisco were suddenly unable to fix Carbon dioxide?
Carbon dioxide fixation would stop, but it would continue to be released by cellular respiration. This would make levels increase rapidly in the atmosphere and production of new plant tissue would cease, starving most animals to death.
Where does photosynthesis begin?
Antenna complex
Where is water split to yield electrons?
Photosystem 2
What is the product of photesystem 2?
Oxygen
Where does photosystem 2 donate electrons to?
Photesystem 1
What is yielded in photosystem 1 and what is it used in?
Nadph, which is used in the Calvin cycle
.what fixes carbon in order to start the Calvin cycle?
Rubisco
How do heterotrophic organisms make energy?.
For eating them
How de autotrophs make energy?
The sun
What is stomata?
Openings on the underside of leaves for gas exchange
What makes up light reaction?
Photosystem 1 and 2
What are the accessory pigments that contribute to the color of leaves?
Chlorophyll B, carotenoids and xanthophylls
What factors affect photosynthesis?
Temperature light intensity and ph
What is phosphorylation?
The capture of light energy by photosystem 2 to produce ATP
