What does a cream consist of?
semisolid emulsion of oil in water with preservative
What is an advantage of ointments over creams?
No preservative so irritate the skin less
Where is a good area of the body to apply lotion?
Scalp and hair bearing areas
What do gels consist of?
contain high molecular weight polymers and are very aqueous
When would a paste be used?
surgical wards, soothing bandages
What do emollients do and what kind of conditions do they treat?
rehydrate epidermis; for dry/scaly conditions eg eczema
Most mild topical steroid?
Hydrocortisone 1%
Most potent topical steroid?
Clobetasol proprionate 0.05%
What is purpura?
less subcutaneous tissue so you get very thin skin
Side effects of topical steroids?
rosacea, perioral dematitis, fixed telangectasia, kidney failure, cushing’s syndrome
What is telangectasia?
dilated blood vessels near the surface of the skin
Give an example of an antiseptic
potassium permanganate
Main viral skin infections?
herpes simplex, eczema herpeticum, herpes zoster (shingles)
Characteristic clinical presentation of ringworm?
unilateral scaling annular rash in someone who gardens

menthol
camphor
