topic 9 - exercise following concussion Flashcards
what was the problem with the first consensus meeting regarding recovery
promoting bed rest - complete bed rest until asymptomatic
- no real evidence to back it up
what are the differences in symptoms between usual activity and bed rest in the 10 days following concussion
usual = bigger drop in symptoms and back to low levels after 10 days
bed rest = delayed recovery for many days (started at similar symptom level to usual group)
what did alexander monro find
- brain enclosed in an non expandable case of bone
- substance of the brain was nearly incompressible
- volume of the blood in the cranial cavity is constant / nearly constant
- continuous outflow of venous blood from the cranial cavity was required to make room fo the continuous incoming arterial blood
what are the changes in CBF and CO2 with exercise
both increase with moderate exercise and decrease at high intensity
due to hyperventilation after VT2
what is one of the main factors contribuitng to headache exacerbation during submax exercise
increase in CBF
what is the association between exercise and time to medical clearance
no one recovered by 10 days
low activity = faster recovery than high activity (too much too soon)
more time spent in moderate-vigourous activity in the first 3 days = longer time to recovery
doing nothing and doing too much = delayed recoveries
