what is the public health impact of concussions in youth

1 in 5 lifetime risk
30% symptomatic for months
what are the consequences of concussion in youth
- decreased participation in sport and rec, school attendance, academic performance
- decreased PA = increased overweight / obesity
- psychosocial consequences (child and family - not in isolation)
- health care and indirect costs are high
- rare but serious outcomes - rowans law
what are the sport specific youth team sport concussion rates
high in rugby and hockey
soccer concussions come from player - player contact and contact with goal posts
what is the burden of sport injury rates
45% of people playing in sport were having greater than 1 injury
30% seek medical attention
36% had time loss
12% concussion
what happened to the % rates over time
all other numbers went down but concussion stayed unchanged
reporting has gone up (likely number has gone done)
why do we think girls have more concussions than boys in rugby (higher overall and rate is more than double)
- often boys play more contact sports earlier in life, girls in rugby is the first exposure to tackling
- differences in psychosocial aspects and reporting

predictable - certain activities have a higher likelihood
preventable - can find ways to prevent
