topic 12 - prevention categories Flashcards
what is primary prevention
prevent or reduce the risk of injury
individual is healthy
changes in polices, procedures, gear, awareness
what is involved in policy and protocol in primary prevention
- governing body should create rules and regulations to protect athletes from concussions
- introduce new practises that outline ethics (fair and safe play) and limit risky behaviour to reduce concussion incidents
- governance of protocol is critical!!
what is involved in education in primary prevention
- knowing causes, signs, and symptoms
- safe concussion management and concussion modifiers
- how to best protect themselves from injury
what is involved in equipment in primary prevention
meet national guidelines, fit correctly, and used for the purpose designed
how to prevent concussions from happening
- implements no checks to the head rule
- have players wear impact softening shoulder and elbow pads
- reduce head to head contact in football
- enforce rules
- place emphasis on respect for the brain among players including opponents
what is secondary prevention
susceptible - concussion has already been sustained
- early interventions, early diagnosis
prevention of injury recurrence
prevention of worsening an existing concussion
- involves education
what is tertiary prevention
prevent long term consequences
rehab strategies and changing culture, being aware of LT consequences
how are culture, governance, and treatment involved in tertiary prevention
culture
- psychological and sociocultural factors in sport play a significant role in uptake of any injury prevention strategy and require consideration
governance
- ensure all sport and rec delivery programs are audited and held accountable when adhering to evidence based guidelines
treatment
- can also employ informed treatment strategies to prevent and reduce the likelihood of long term ramifications from concussion
what is the overall goal of tertiary prevention
prevent long term complications like CTE
recommend permanent removal from play (esp after repeated concussions) - in the end it’s player’s decision
what is the ideal approach to management
upstream management
- primary prevention makes the biggest impact overall
- best injury is the one that didn’t happen
