Q

what are the newer helmet models for

A

potential to reduce impact forces
(ineffective in mitigating the mvmt of the brain inside the skull)

3
Q

what is the guardian cap

A

consists of soft shelled, closed foam covered in spandex mounted to the helmet using straps near the facemask and back
adds about 1/2 pound of weight
extra layer of absorption

4
Q

what is the benefit of the guardian cap

A

increase the distance of deceleration = lower total forces transmitted to the brain
not really a significant difference in head kinetics

better at lower velocity - works in lower level players

Q

what are the benefits of rugby scrum caps

A

experimentally reduced linear and rotational impacts
not a ton of difference in injury risk between wearing and not wearing

Q

when did helmets become implemented in the NHL

A

goalies in the 1930s to prevent skull fractures
players in 70s

Q

does wearing bike helmets reduce the number of patients with a concussion

A

fewer facial fractures, skull fractures, and major TBIs

doesn’t mean that less is happening but changing more severe TBI to less severe (concussion)

head injuries go up as helmet use goes down

8
Q

what is MIPS (multidirectional impact protection system)

A

slip liner inside helmet
allows the head to slide relative to the helmet during impact

most protective at low velocity impacts (can’t disperse high velocity as well)

9
Q

what is the comparison between new tech and regular helmets

A

new tech performed better than conventional helmets at low velocity and angular momentum

10
Q

is there a difference in SRC injuries in soccer with or without headgear

A

no conclusive results

most contact leading to concussions is player to player not player to ball

Q

what is armourgel

A
  • impact protection proportional to the force applied
  • material that stiffens the harder it’s hit
  • changes shock absorption with shock applied
  • disperse force over a greater distance

12
Q

what were the results of the soccer heading study related to headgear

A

No headgear - 98% of impacts over 10G
F90 cap - 86% of impacts over 10G
Custom armour gel - 73% of impacts over 10G

F90 cap = 15% less linear and 22% less rotational
Armourgel = 58% less linear and 48% less rotational

13
Q

what were the results of the soccer heading study overall

A

larger reduction in number of severity of symptoms (headache, pressure in the head, and neck pain)
improved quiet stance balance after headgear
no alterations to executive function markers
improved reaction times in both cases

Q

what is the q collar

A

saying it reduces internal forces by applying pressure to the jugular vein and making the brain feel more full
- idea is that it prevents the brain from shaking inside the skull
- traps blood in the brain for longer

Q

what is the q collar based on

A

woodpecker (tongue wrapped inside skull)
- not extra fluid

16
Q

what are the problems with the q collar

A

impeding outflow = metabolic byproducts can’t be flushed out - brain is sensitive to those (CO2, free radicals)

more blood in the brain = forces transmitted deeper into the brain

mean diffusivity - goes up with concussion - deeper brain tissues showed disruptions with use of q collar - different areas of the brain showing deficits
