topic 14 - knowledge translation Flashcards
what is knowledge translation (KT)
raising knowledge users awareness of research findings and facilitating the use of those findings
balance between raising knowledge and use
how long does it take to get research from the lab to the community
17 years on average
how long does each step of KT take
Original research - null findings?
- months to years
submissions to journals - null findings?
- 3-6 months
acceptance
- 6-9 months
publication
- 1-3 months
bibliographic databases - where it can be found and cited, might not be indexed properly
- 6-13 years
review, paper, textbook
- 5-10 years to get to implementation
implementation
what are the 2 points of the knowledge to action framework
knowledge creation process
action cycle
what is the knowledge creation process
after research has been done
involves gathering and compiling the knowledge available on a topic, summarising the knowledge and creating a tool that can be used to improve health care
what is the action cycle
identify problem and what we can do about it
adapt info to target areas, tailor messages, and improve outcomes for different groups
don’t need to complete in order
can go back and forth from one phase to another
what are the 2 broad categories of KT
integrated KT (iKT)
end of project KT
what is involved in integrated KT
involve knowledge users as equal partners alongside researchers to lead to more relevant/useful research
knowledge users participate throughout the whole process (in position to influence decision making authority to integrate knowledge into environment where they practise)
what is the specific objective of iKT
responding to a problem or knowledge gap identified by knowledge users
what is the benefit of iKT
likely to increase uptake of findings and improve the likelihood that the research will have an impact
what is end of project KT
covers any activity aimed at diffusing, disseminating, or applying the results of a research project
what is diffusion
“let it happen”
communication of info using delivery mechanism for which little customisation is required to reach target audiences that typically seek out research evidence
peer review, conferences, annual reports, etc
what is dissemination
“help it happen”
more tailored, communication vehicle and messaging are adapted to the specific audience and or context in which the knowledge will be used
educational materials, media releases, marketing, etc
what is application / implementation
“make it happen”
more tailored
moves knowledge into use in cases where the strength of the evidence is sufficient
