topic 11 - potential treatments Flashcards
why is sleep critical for recovery
- link neural with endocrine system - hormone release
- using BDNF released to promote healing
- neural synaptic plasticity
- critical for learning and memory consolidation
- aids in beta amyloid, free radical clearance
- eliminating neurotoxic waste products
when is insomnia usually diagnosed
symptoms persist for 4 weeks
(already in PPCS range)
chronic if symptoms persist for 3 months +
how is insomnia treated
cognitive behavioural therapy
- sleep restriction therapy - more optimal to maximise sleep efficiency (reduce time in bed to only slightly above total sleep time)
- stimulus control - restrict bedroom activity to sleep
- cognitive therapy - work on worry
- relaxation - get into more relaxed state to bring on theta waves
- sleep hygiene - eliminate sleep interfering behaviours such as excessive/poorly timed caffeine consumption
what disorders have higher rates in concussion population
insomnia
sleep apnea
hypersomniac
periodic limb mvmt disorder
what is the effect of blue light exposure in the morning
suppresses melatonin and phase advances in circadian rhythm
what was the effect of timed blue light exposure on insomnia
shifted sleep onset 57.5 min earlier
shifted wake time 55.9 min earlier
no change in total amount of sleep
reduced daytime sleepiness
reduced number of nightly hours of sleep needed to feel their best
