Topic 7 - causes of TBI Flashcards
what are the largest causes of TBI across the lifespan
transport = big cause of death
falls = 0-4 and 65+
sport and rec = grade school (peak in adolescence and start to decrease in late 20s)
abusive head trauma (<4yo in girls, and <1yo in boys)
playground equipment
what is the problem with concussion stats (1-2million SRC in US)
- likely underestimated
- only record of SRC are the ones that got reported
- at least the same number or double aren’t being reported
- way less than half treated by the medical system
- reporting is not always accurate to the cause
what is the comparison between SRC and concussions from falls
amount of concussions from falls are larger than any peak in SRC in teens
why was there an increase in ED visits from concussion in 2010 with a plateau in 2018
increase in awareness around concussion (sid crosby back to back concussions that took him out for a year)
taking potential long term conseqeunces more seriously
no increases in hospitalisation rates (number of serious head injuries stayed consistent)
what % of concussions seek medical care
12% overall
1/2 to 1/3 of SRC seek medical care
