what are actigraphs
small, non invasive accelerometers on wrist
what do actigraphs do
measure gross motor activity - on wrist to measure small movements
mainly used for research
can provide not only sleep but can also capture PA during the day
what is polysonography
expensive and high tech (gold standard usually)
what is the pittsburgh sleep quality index and epworth sleepiness scale
quick and simple self report questionnaires that assess sleep related behaviours
very subjective self report
what are sleep diaries
simple, low tech option for extended sleep behaviour monitoring
normally completed for 14 days upon waking each morning
include time they went to bed/sleep, nighttime waking, daily napping, caffeine/alcohol use
what is the insomnia severity index
self reported checklist aimed to evaluate sleep disruptions related to insomnia
can be used for initial screening of symptoms and evaluate effectiveness of insomnia related treatments
what does polysonography measure
records brain waves (EEG), muscle activation (EMG), and heart activity (ECG)
can be informed about sleep architecture
is there a gold standard sleep measure
no consensus regarding standardised sleep assessment nor a set of sleep related common data elements for concussions
