Tools And Equipment Flashcards
Cold Chisel…
Tool is forged to shape, hardened and tempered at the cutting edge, used for cutting cold metals. Meaning they are not used with cutting torches.
When using the cold chisel, use a ball peen hammer.
DO NOT USE THE CLAW HAMMER.
The head is not tempered for striking hard metal and can chip.
Linesman Heavy Duty Side Cutting Pliers…
Used mainly in electrical trade for stripping or cutting wire or cable. Also used for gripping, twisting, bending, or crimping. Have a bevelled cutting edge and tapered nose which can be used to ream out conduit openings and junction box holes.
Needle or Long Nose Pliers…
Are both cutting and holding pliers. Becuase of their long shape they are useful for reaching into small areas where cables or other materials become stuck or unreachable with fingers.
Chainsaw safety…
There are two types of kickback that can be encountered with improper use of a chainsaw… rotational and linear.
Rotational Kickback…
Rotational kickback is the violent reaction which occurs when the chain at the upper section of the nose is suddenly stopped, thereby creating a dangerous situation by driving the bar nose in an upward arc towards the operator.
Linear Kickback…
Linear kickback is a push reaction. It occurs if the saw blade is buried in the cut when the cut closes and thereby pinches the chain along the top rails of the bar.
To prevent kickback…
Keep a good, firm two hand grip on the saw.
Don’t let the kickback zone of the guide bar contact obstructions while operating the saw.
Always cut at full RPM.
Do not over reach and cut above shoulder height.
Bulletsaw and chainsaw….
Is it a problem to run these saws with the chain brake on?
If the saw is run with the chainbrake engaged; the clutch, oil pump, and chain brake will be damaged.
Chain brake positioning…
This is designed to stop the rotation of the chain in less than 1/12 of a second.
What are the three positions of the chain brake and what do they do?
Position 1 Center position - This is the neutral position; the chain brake in disengaged. This is where the saw is operated and the chain will turn freely.
Position 2 Forward position - The brake is engaged.
Position 3 Back position - This position is used to disengage the brake. Pull back handle completely.
If the saw is run with the chain brake engaged; the clutch, oil pump, and chain brake will all be damaged
Chain Tension…
Proper chain tension is a key factor in reducing carbide breakage and increasing the life of the guide bar. With proper chain tension, the chain is as tight as possible without restricting chain movement.
At proper chain tension, the chain is in full contact with the guide bar along the bottom rail. There is no sag.
To check the tension, pull the chain at midpoint away from bottom rails until the drive link barely clears the rail. When you let go, the chain should snap back into place.
Cutter’s Edge bullet saw cold start…
To start the saw, place it on the ground in a well ventilated area (pre-start at ground level). Grip the top handle firmly and place your foot on the outer edge of back handle (no drop starts).
When pull starting the saw, DO NOT PULL START CORD OUT TO ITS FULL LENGTH, only use short brisk pulls.
Stihl chainsaw cold start…
To start the saw, place it on the ground in a well ventilated area (pre-start at ground level). Make sure the chain brake is engaged. Grip the top handle firmly and place your foot on the outer edge of back handle (no drop starts).
When pull starting the saw, DO NOT PULL START CORD OUT TO ITS FULL LENGTH, only use short brisk pulls.
Troubleshooting a flooded chainsaw…
Flooding a chainsaw or a two-cycle engine happens when they are over cranked.
There are two ways to troubleshoot a flooded chainsaw…
Method 1. Set saw in a well ventilated area, let saw sit for 15-20 minutes to allow the fuel to evaporate from engine and repeat the cold start procedure. Opening up the carb will assist this process.
Method 2. (Partial saw disassembly) - After removing carb cover and air filter, pull spark plug wire off spark plug and remove spark plug from power head (inspect spark plug). To remove excess fuel, invert saw and allow fuel to drain out. While saw is inverted, pull start cord 15-20 times. This should remove excess fuel from crankcase. Reassemble saw components, install clean or new spark plug and air filter.
Emergency flooded chainsaw start procedure (two firefighter method, maybe one)…
Maintain full throttle control with one hand and pull cord with other. Pin saw with foot on handle. When pull starting the saw, DO NOT PULL START CORD OUT TO ITS FULL LENGTH, only use short brisk pulls. Pull saw until it starts which can be 8-20 times.
Cutter’s Edge bullet saw chain…
What does the CFD manual say about the bullet saw chain condition?
If the bullet chain has six or more broken cutters, they should be repaired or replace the chain.
Fuel and oil for Cutter’s Edge bullet saw and Stihl chainsaw…
The Cutter’s Edge bullet saw requires either regular gasoline with synthetic pre-mix oil mixed at 100:1 ratio or if the oil pre-mix is petroleum based 2-cycle oil it is 50:1 ratio. It is important to know that the Stihl chainsaw does not require different mixtures it is just a 50:1 ratio.
What is the Chevron tape used for?
This tape indicates that no one is to enter the area.
What is the Red Tape used for?
This tape indicates that full PPE is to be worn in the Hot Zone.
What is the Yellow Fire Line Tape for?
This tape indicates a do not cross line.
