What are 5 respiratory hazards in an IDLH environment?
- Oxygen deficiency
- Elevated temperatures
- Particulate contaminants
- Gases and vapors
- Airborne pathogens
What are non-emergency indicators?
- Situation is stabilized
- Change in operational strategy
- Necessary to replace air cylinder

PASS device… p194
PASS emits a loud alarm to alert other personnel that a firefighter is in danger.
The alarm activates when a firefighter has been motionless for 30 seconds or when a firefighter presses the emergency button. The alarm must be at least 95 decibels and must go off continually for one hour.
Oxygen deficiency… p202
NFPA and OSHA define an oxygen deficient environment as one containing less than 19.5% oxygen.
When oxygen levels fall below 18%, the human body increases its respiratory rate. As less oxygen reaches body tissues, hypoxia occurs.
How many decibels must the PASS be and how long must it alarm for continuously?
The alarm must be 95 dBA and must go off continuously for one hour.
At what temperature does the MSA facepiece fail at?
The facepiece will fail at 500f.
If your protective clothing requires only routine cleaning that will not cause the item to be removed from service, you should perform the cleaning yourself…
If you ever determine that your PPE requires advanced cleaning or decon, repairs, or replacement, report to your supervisor and send your gear to cleaning.
What should be used to clean face pieces that have been in an IDLH environment or need routine cleaning?
Use warm water and Ecolab Neutral Disinfectant Cleaner. After dunking face piece into cleaning solution, use fresh warm water to rinse off any solution.
When cleaning SCBA, use soapy water to clean back frame and harness assembly with a soft bristle brush to remove deposits that may interfere with normal operation…
To clean regulator, ensure SCBA cylinder is attached and open to pressurize the system, immerse the regulator in the Ecolab Neutral disinfectant cleaner and agitiate it. Rinse the regulator in clean cold water to wash off any remaining solution.
