Tongue Flashcards
what forms the posterior 1/3rd of the tongue ?
the base of the tongue ( which is connected to the epiglottis
what is the V shaped depression on that divides the tongue into anterior and posterior parts called ?
terminalis sulcus
oral part of the tongue = anterior 2/3rd
pharyngeal part of the tongue = posterior 1/3rd
–
The sulcus is directed from a central depression called ___
foramen caecum
what are the different types of papillae present on the tongue ?
- ) vallate papillae : 8-12 in number . can be found infant of the sulcus terminals , contains taste buds
- ) fungiform pailliae :rounded reddish elevations found on the apex and sides of the tongues , contains taste buds
- )filiform papillae: numerous in number , found in the center of the tongue , do not contain tats buds
- )Foliate pappilae: 3 or 4 vertical folds that may or may not be present , contains taste buds
what is present on the inferior surface of the tongue ?
deep lingual vein
frenulum
plica fimbriata
what are the 2 types of muscles present in the tongue ?
extrinsic muscles : muscles that alter the position of the tongue
intrinsic muscles : muscles that alter the shape of the tongue
what are the extrinsic muscles and what are their functions ?
genioglossus : protrudes tongue
hyoglossus :
depresses tongue
styloglossus : retracts tongue
palatoglossus : elevates tongue
what are the intrinsic muscles found in the tongue ?
- superior longitudinal
- inferior longitudinal
- transverse fibers
- vertical fibers
what is the motor nerve supply of the tongue ?
all muscles are supplies by hypoglussal nerve (12th cranial nerve )except for palatoglossus which is supplies by the accessory nerve (11th cranial nerve )
describe the sensory nerve supply of the tongue .
anterior 2/3rd :
general sensation : lingual nerve
specific sensation ( taste ) : chordates tympani
posterior 1/3rd: glossopharyngeal
why structures are responsible for blood supply of the tongue ?
arteries :
-lingual artery
- tonsillar branch of facial artery
- ascending pharyngeal artery
veins :lingual vein , ultimately drains into internal jugular vein
