Palate Flashcards
what is the hard palate formed by ?
palatine process of maxilla in front
and
horizontal plates of palatine bones behind
it is bound by alveolar arches
describe the soft palate .
it is a fibro-musculo-glandular curtain which hangs from the posterior margin of the hard palate .
where does the soft palate extend ?
extends backwards between the nasal and oral parts of the pharynx
what are the palato-glossal and palato pharyngeal arches ?
2 mucus folds that extend down from the base of the uvula
Palato-glossal arch liwa infront of the tonsillar fossa and is form the tongue to palate
palato-pharyngeal arch lies behind the the tonsillar fossa and is from the pharynx to the palate
what is the palatine aponeurosis ?
fibrous framework where all muscles of palate are attached
what are the muscles of the palate and what are their functions ?
tensor veli palatini : tenses soft palate
levator veli palatini : raises soft palate
musculus uvulae : elevates uvula
palatoglossus :pulls root of tongue upward, narrowing oropharyngeal isthmus
Palatopharyngeus: Elevates wall of the pharynx
what supplies blood to the palate ?
branches of maxillary artery :
- greater palatine
- lesser palatine
- sphenopalatine
branch of facial artery : ascending palatine
branch of external carotid artery : ascending pharyngeal
what motor nerves supply the palate ?
motor : all muscles are supplied by the accessory nerve (11th cranial nerve ) except for the tensor veli palatini which is supplied by the trunk of the mandubular nerve
what sensory nerves supply the palate ?
mostly by maxilary nevre branches :
- greater palatini nerve
- lesser palatini nerve
- nasopalatini nerve
what nerve supplies the soft palate ?
glossopharyngeal
