blood and nerve supply of the face Flashcards
what vessels are responsible for the blood supply of the face?
facial artery
transverse facial artery
cutaneous branches of trigeminal nerve
where does the facial artery originate from?
external carotid artery ( which comes from the carotid triangle in the neck )
describe the route the facial artery take from the carotid triangle in the neck onwards .
the facial artery originates from the external carotid artery . it enters the groove on the posterior surface of the submandibular gland , then curves upwards to the inferior region of the masseter, then passes forward and upwards across the cheek to the angle of the mouth , then continues up along the side of the nose and finally makes it to the commissure of the eye under the name “angular artery”
what are the branches of the facial artery in the face ?
- ) inferior labial ( below lower lip)
- ) superior labial (above upper lip)
- ) lateral nasal (nose)
- ) angular artery ( medial angle of the eye
how many arteries does the external parotid artery branch into?
8 arteries , one of which is the facial artery
what type of artery do places in the body that require a lot of blood usually have?
tortuous arteries (curved)
describe the formation of the facial vein .
supra trochlear and supra orbital vein unite to form the angular vein which continues down as facial vein in the medial angle of the eye .
what course does the facial vein follow?
it runs behind the facial artery
describe the formation of the common facial vein
the facial vein runs behind the facial artery . it then then joins with the anterior division of the retromandibular vein , forming the common facial vein
what does the common facial vein drain into?
internal jugular vein
what are the clinical significances of the facial vein?
it has no valves
connects to the cavernous sinus
danger area of the face
what structure controls the sensory nerve supply of the face and what does it consist of ?
the trigeminal nerve , which is made up of the
ophalmic
maxillary
and mandibular branches (look at picture )
what dictates the motor nerve supply of the face ?
5 branches
- )temporal branch
- )zygomatic branch
- ) buccal branch
- ) mandibular branch
- ) cervical branch
