Orbit 2 Flashcards
what are the sensory nerves present in the orbit ?
optic nerve
ophthalmic nerve
what are the motor nerves present in the orbit
abducent
trochlear
oculomotor
–maxillary nerve does not supply the orbit , it supplies the skin of the face
the optic nerve enters the optic canal accompanied by __
ophthalmic artery
what is the optic nerve surrounded by?
meninges (covering of the brain) and the subarachnoid space containing CSF
What muscles does the optic nerve run along ?
cone of the recti muscles , it then pierces the sclera at a point medial to the posterior pole of the eyeball . here the meninges fuse with the sclera
what is the smallest of the 3 divisions of the trigeminal nerve ?
ophthalmic nerve
where does the ophthalmic arise from ?
arises from the superomedial part of the trigeminal ganglion
the ophthalmic nerve runs in the lateral wall of the cavernous sinus and divides into :
frontal nerve
lacrimal nerve
nasociliary nerve
what muscles does the lacrimal nerve run along ?
upper border of lateral rectus
what does the lacrimal nerve supply ?
lacrimal gland , and skin of the lateral part of the upper eyelid
what muscle does the frontal nerve run along ?
superior surface of the levator palpebrae superioris
what are the divisions of the frontal nerve ?
just before the orbital margin it divides into the supretrochlear nerve and the supra-orbital nerve
what is the most medial nerve in the orbit ?
nasociliary nerve
nasociliary nerve Crosses above the optic nerve with the ophthalmic artery, to reach the medial wall of the orbital cavity
..
what muscle does the nasociliary nerve run along with ?
runs forward along the upper margin of the medial rectus, and ends by dividing into the anterior ethmoidal & infratrochlear nerves
what does the oculomotor nerve go through in order to get to the orbit ?”
enters the orbit through the lower part of the superior orbital fissure ( as 2 divisions )
what muscle does the trochlear nerve run across?
origin of the levator palpebrae superioris
frontal
lacrimal
trochlear = upper part of superior orbital fissue
nasociliary
oculomotor
abducenrt = lower part
what muscle does the trochlear nerve run forwards too and supplies?
lateral rectus
(legion of nerve leads to diplopia and medial squint
what is the arterial supply of the orbit ?
ophthalmic artery (branch of INTERNAL carotid artery)
what is the venous drainage of the orbit ?
superior and inferior ophthalmic veins , drain into the cavernous sinus
