facial muscles Flashcards
the facial muscle are subcutaneous . what does that mean?
it means that they are just under the skin .
where to facial muscles generally originate from?
from the surface of the skull bones ( rarely the fascia )and insert on the skin of the face .
what are the characteristics of the skin of the face ?
it is highly vascular , rich in sebaceous and sweat glands .
it is thick , elastic and provides attachment of facial muscle
nose and auricle skin is highly adhered to underlying cartilage which is why boils in this area are very painful
fat is abundant in cheek but absent in eyelids ,
deep fascia is absent in face except for parotid fascia .
Subcutaneous tissue or superficial fascia contains facial muscles, nerves, vessels and variable amount of fat
list the muscles present in the eyelids
orbicularis occuli
corrugator supercilli
levator palpebrae superioris
list the muscles present in the nose
procerous
nasalis
depressor septi
what are the muscles present around the mouth ?
orbicularis oris
what are the muscles that are present in the upper Lip?
levator labii superioris
levator labii superioris ataeque nasi
zygomaticus minor
what are the muscles present in the lower lip?
depressor labii inferioris
what are the muscles present at the angle of the mouth?
buccinator
zygomaticus major
levator anguli oris
depressor anguli iris
resoris
describe the upper , lower , and middle fibers of the buccinator .
upper fibers - originate from maxilla opposite to molar teeth and are inserted into the upper lip ( start from the top , end at the top)
lower fibers originate from the mandible opposite of molar teeth and are inserted into the lower lip( start from bottom end at the bottom )
middle fibers originate from pterigomandibular raphe and re inserted in thedecussate before passing to lips
what is the function of middle fibers in the buccinator ?
prevent the accumulation of food in vestibule of mouth
