Titrations are Used to Find about Concentrations Flashcards
What do titrations allow you to find out?
Exactly how much acid is needed to neutralise a quantity of alkali
What do you do by using a pipette and pipette filler?
Add some alkali (about 25cm³) to a conical flask, along with two or three drops of indicator
What does the pipette filler stop you getting?
A mouthful of acid
What do you fill a burette with?
The acid
What do you do using the burette?
Add the acid to the alkali a bit at a time - giving the conical flask a regular swirl
When do you go especially slowly?
When you think the end-point is about to be reached
When does the indicator change colour?
When all the alkali has been neutralised
What do you record?
The volume of acid used to neutralise the alkali
Why is it best to repeat this process?
More reliable results
Conical flask -
Containing alkali and indicator
Pipette -
Measure only one volume of solution. Fill about 3cm above the line, then drop the level down carefully to the line
Burette -
Measures different volumes and lets you add the solution drop by drop
