Halogen - Seven Letters - Group 7 Flashcards
What are halogens?
The elements in group 7
What happens to the properties of the elements in group 7 as you go down the group?
Gradually change
Properties of chlorine?
Atomic number: 17
Colour: green
Physical state at room temp: gas
Boiling point: -34 °C
Properties of bromine?
Atomic number: 35
Colour: red-brown
Physical state at room temp: liquid
Boiling point: 59 °C
Properties of iodine?
Atomic number: 53
Colour: dark grey
Physical state at room temp: solid
Boiling point: 185 °C
As the atomic number of the halogens increases…
The elements have a darker colour and a higher boiling point
The higher up group 7 an element is, the more reactive it is - why?
Because the shell with the missing electron is nearer to the nucleus, so the pull from the positive nucleus is greater
What might you need to use these trends to predict?
The properties of other halogens e.g fluorine
