What is the main impurity?

A

Sand - still solid even at 1500°C and would tend to stay mixed in with the iron

What is the limestone decomposed by and what into?

A

The heat into calcium oxide and CO2

CaCO3 —> CaCO + CO2

What does the calcium oxide then do?

A

Reacts with the sand to from calcium silicate, or slag, which is molten and can be tapped off
CaO + SiO2 —> CaSiO3 (molten slag)
