Substances Can Change from One State to Another Flashcards
What do physical changes do?
Don’t change particles, just arrangement or their energy
- What happens when a solid is heated?
It’s particles gain more energy
- What does this make the particles do? What does this do to the solid?
The particles vibrate more, which weakens the forces that hold the solid together, making the solid expand
- What happens at a certain temp?
The particles have enough energy to break free from their positions. This is called melting - solid turns into liquid
- What happens when a liquid is heated?
The particles get even more energy
- What does this energy make the particles do?
Move faster, weakening and breaking the bonds holding the liquid together
- What happens at a certain temp?
The particles have enough energy to break their bonds. Called evaporating and the liquid turns to gas
How does a gas go to a liquid?
Condensing - heat energy given out
How does a liquid go to a solid?
Freezing - heat energy given out
How does a liquid go to a gas?
Evaporating - heat energy supplied
How does a solid go to a liquid?
Melting - heat energy supplied
How does a solid go to a gas?
Subliming - heat energy supplied
