Simple Distillation is Used to Separate Out Solutions Flashcards
What is simple distillation used for?
Separating out a liquid from a solution
What is done to the solution first?
It’s heated
Which part of the solution evaporates?
The part that has the lowest boiling point
What is then done to the vapour?
It is then cooled, condenses and collected
What is done with the rest of the solution?
It is left behind in the flask
What can you use simple distillation to get? What is done to get this?
pure Water from sea water
Water evaporates and is condensed and collected
End up with just salt left in flask
What is the problem with simple distillation?
You can only use it to separate things with very different boiling points
What do you do if you have a mixture of liquids with similar boiling points?
You need another method to separate them out - like fractional distillation
