Conditions for Cracking: Heat, Plus a Catalyst Flashcards
1
Q
In industry, what are vaporised hydrocarbons passed over?
A
A powdered catalyst at about 600°C-700°C
2
Q
What are used as catalysts?
A
Silica and alumina
3
Q
See diagram for cracking pacing in the lab
A
Ok
4
Q
What do you do first?
A
Start by heating the paraffin
5
Q
What do you do after a few seconds?
A
Move the Bunsen burned to heat the silica or alumina catalysis - alternate until paraffin vaporises and catalyst glows red
6
Q
What does the heated paraffin vapour do as it passes over the heated catalyst?
A
Cracks
7
Q
What collects at the end of the boiling tube?
A
Small Alkanes
8
Q
What travel down the delivery tube?
A
Alkene gases
9
Q
How are the alkenes collected?
A
Through water using a gas jar
10
Q
See diagram for molecules
A
Ok
