CO2 is used in Fizzy Drinks and Fire Extinguishers Flashcards
Why is CO2 used in carbonated drinks?
To make them fizz
What does the CO2 do in water and why?
It’s slightly soluble and dissolves into the drink when under pressure
What does the formation of carbonic acid produce?
A slightly acidic solution
What happens when you open the fizzy drink?
The bubbles are the CO2 escapiv
Why will the drink go flat if you leave it out long enough?
All the CO2 will escape
Carbonic acid symbol equation:
CO2(g) + H2O(l) —> H2CO3(aq)
Carbonic acid word equation:
Carbon dioxide + water —> carbonic acid
What is carbon dioxide also used in?
Fire extinguishers
How do fire extinguishers work?
The CO2 is more dense than air - sinks onto flames and stops oxygen fire needs getting to it
When are carbon dioxide fire extinguishers used instead of water extinguishes?
When they’re aren’t safe e.g electrical fires
