Reducing the Iron Ore to Iron: Flashcards
1
Q
What is done first? (Hot)
A
Hot air is blasted into the furnace, making the coke burn much faster than normal - raises temp to about 1500°C
2
Q
2) what does the coke do?
A
Burns and produces carbon dioxide
C + O2 —> CO2
3
Q
3) what does the CO2 do?
A
Reacts with unburnt coke to form CO
CO2 + C —> 2CO
4
Q
4) what does the carbon monoxide do?
A
Reduces the iron ore to iron
3CO + Fe2O3 —> 3CO2 + 2Fe
5
Q
What is the iron like at this temp?
A
Molten and very dense, so runs straight to the bottom of the furnace where it’s tapped off
