Ionic Compounds All Form in a Similar Way Flashcards
What do ‘dot and cross’ diagrams show?
What happens to the electrons when ionic bonding happens
Look at diagrams page 11
Ok
What happens in sodium chloride?
Sodium atom gives up its outer electron, becoming Na+ ion
Chlorine atoms picks up electron, becoming Cl- ion
What happens in magnesium oxide?
Magnesium atoms gives up two outer electrons, becoming Mg2+ Ion
Oxygen atoms picks up electrons, becoming O2- ion
What happens in sodium oxide?
Two sodium atoms give up outer electrons, becoming two Na+ ions
Oxygen atom picks up two electrons, becoming O2- ion
What happens in calcium chloride?
Calcium atom gives up its two outer electrons, becoming Ca2+
Two chlorine atoms pick up one electron each, becoming two Cl- ions
What happens as a result of this giving and taking of electrons?
All the atoms end up with full outer shells
