Cryolite is Used to Lower the Temperature (and Costs) Flashcards
1
Q
Why would melting pure aluminium oxide be very expensive?
A
It has a very high melting point of over 2000°C
2
Q
What is done instead of melting?
A
The aluminium oxide is dissolved in molten cryolite
3
Q
Why is dissolving better?
A
It brings temp down to about 900°C, making it easier and cheaper
4
Q
What are the electrodes made of?
A
Graphite, a good conductor of electricity
