Thyroid and antithyroid drugs? Flashcards
What are the three hormones the thyroid gland secretes?
Thyroxine, tri-iodothyronine, and clacitonin
What is the role of the parathyroid gland?
It produces hormones that naintain calcium in the ECF
What is the function of the thyroid gland?
Regulates macronutrient metabolism, help with growth and development, control the thermoregulatory centre, and affects cardiovascular, neuromuscular and endocrine systems.
What is hypothyroidism and what are the three levels?
This is a deficiency in thyroid hormones. The three levels are primary which is abnormal thyroid, secondary when pituitary gland is dysfunctional, and tertiary which is when hypothalamus doesn’t secrete thyrotropin hormone which helps thyroid secrete.
What is congenital hypothyroidism?
This is when there is low secretions of thyroid hormone during youth resulting in delayed growth and development
What is myxedema?
This is low secretions of thyroid hormone in adulthood and causes delayed metabolism
What is a goitre?
This is when there is an enlargement of the thyroid gland because of overstimulation of the thyroid through oversecretion of TSH
WHat are symptoms of hypothyroidism?
Cold intolernace, weight gain, depression, fatigue
What is the main example of a thyroid replacement drug?
Levothyroxine
What is the MOA of thyroid replacement drugs?
They replace the hormones the thyroid gland is unable to produce.
What is the main adverse effect of levotyroxine?
Cardiac dysrhythmias
What are important things to consider when giving thyroid replacement drugs?
Do not discontinue abruptly, give at the same time everyday, and don’t interchange brands
What is hyperthyroidism and what causes it?
This is when the thyroid secretes too much thyroid hormone. It is caused by graves disease, thyroid storm, multinodular disease
What is the overall effect of hyperthyroidism?
It has an overall effect of increased metabolism
What are antithyroid drugs?
They are used to treat the excess thyroid hormone from an overactive thyroid gland
