adrenal drugs Flashcards
What are the three types of adrenal drugs?
Glucocorticoids, mineralocorticoid, and adrenal steroid inhibitors
What are the three main examples of glucocorticoids?
hydrocortisone, methylprednisolone, and prednisolone
What is the main example of mineralocorticoids?
Fludrocortisone 21 acetate
What are the effects of oversecretion of adrenal hormones?
Cushings syndrome
What are the effects of undersecretion of adrenal hormones?
addisons disease
What are the main indications for corticosteroids?
Adrenocortical deficiency, GI diseases, respiratory illness, organ transplant, spinal chord injury, inflammation in general
How are glucocorticoids administered?
Inhalation, nasally for rhinitis, topically
What is an important adverse effect of adrenal drugs and how is it treated?
They can cause ulcers so they are given alongside food
What is an example of an adrenal steroid inhibitor?
Ketoconazole
What are the main contraindications for these drugs?
Serious infections, diabetes, glaucoma,
What type of patients should we be cautious with in giving glucocorticoids?
Patients with gastritis, diabetes, cardiac renal and liver dysfunction
What are the main adverse effects of glucocorticoids
Psychosis, hypoglycemia, and insomnia
What are the main drug interactions?
NSIADS, furosemide, Aspirin
What is the difference between solu medrol (methylprednisolone) and solu cortef (prednisolone)
Both drugs are glucocorticoids given through IV but solu-medrol is stronger
What happens if adrenal drugs are suddenly discontinued?
They will suffer an adrenal crisis. So hypoglycemia, hypokalemia, decreased BP
