Cholinergic drugs Flashcards
What are early signs of a cholinergic crisis?
Orthostatic hypotension, flushed skin, abdominal cramps, nausea.
What is the only direct-acting drug you need to know for eyes? how does it work?
Pilocarpine. It reduces intraocular pressure and is used for glaucoma
What is bethanechol? Is it a direct or nondirect acting?
It is a drug that increases the tone and motility of bladder and GI tract. It is a direct acting.
What is a big contraindication for bethanechol?
Peptic ulcer disease
What is succinycholine and is it direct acting?
It is direct acting and is used as a neuromuscular blocker for general anaesthesia
What is the drug for reverse anticholinergic poisoning?
Physostigmine
When should physgrastime be given for clients with myasthenia gravis and why?
30 minutes before eating to help them to have better muscle control when eating
What is the differecne between direct acting and indirect acting cholinergic agonist?
Direct acting binds to cholinergic receptors while indirect inhibit enzyme that breaks down ACh which causes ACh to stick around
What are drug effects of cholinergic drugs?
Salivation, lacrimation, urination, defacation, GI and emesis (SLUDGE)
What drug is used for glaucoma?
Pilocarpine
What is the drug that helps with GI motility and bladder emptying?
Bethanechol
What drug is used as a neuromuscular blocker?
succinylcholine
What drug is used for treating alzeihmers disease and is it direct or indirect?
Donepezil is an indirect-acting cholinergic drug
What are adverse effects of cholinergic drugs?
Bradycardia, hypotension, abdominal cramps, bronchial secretions
What is the treatment for cholinergic crisis?
Atropine sulphate, cholinergic antagonist
