Theme 16: Osmo 3 Flashcards
what do excretory organs do?
regulate salt, water and nitrogenous waste
|What 3 things are the functions of most excretory organs based on?
filtration
secretion
selective reabsoption
what are the two basic mechanisms in most osmoregulation/excretory organs?
Filtration
Secretion/ reabsorption
What is protonephridia
the first kidneys
used for removal of nitrogenous waste
in flat worms, rotifers, etc
How did protonephridia work?
network of closed tubules where interstitial fluid filters into the flame bulb, then the solutes are absorbed and water and waste exit at the nephridiopore
What is a metanephridia?
second type of kidney, filter coelomic fluid through the nephrostome (power source) and then capillaries reabsorb it
What are malpigian tubules?
how insects do secretion, open circulation, no filtration
What are vertebrate kidneys?
internal organs that provide osmoregulation and nitrogenous waste removal, based on linear compartmentalization of processes in tubules
what is hyposmotic urine?
diluted urine
what is hyperosmotic urine?
Concentrated urine,
What 4 actions do vertebrate kidneys do?
- filtration
- reabsorption
- secretion
- excretion
what is the lined with?
epithelial cells
The sequence of events in the kidney is:(4)
blood to urine collecting area
modification of primary urine
proximal end of tubule
distal end of tubule
what are 4 things that are reabsorbed by the liver?
sugars
amino acids
calcium
NaCl
What is the main thing that the liver does so that the kidney will secrete them immediately?
the liver marks waste and toxic products
