The working memory model (Baddley and Hitch) Flashcards
What is the central executive?
Control centre of the working memory. And identifies which information should be sent to one of its sub systems.
What is the phonological loop?
Deals with auditory information from the senses to produce a memory trace
What is the visuospatial sketchpad?
Used to temporarily store visual and spatial info (also feel/kinaesthetics).
It is used for navigation
What is the episodic buffer?
Co-ordinates the sight, hearing and movement info into sequences for LTM.
What are the two parts of the phonological loop?
- Phonological store- holds information in speech based form
- Articulatory process- repeats things in our head to create a memory trace
What will happen if something is not rehearsed in the working memory?
It will fade away
Give an example of material that would enter the phonological loop
- Call of a teammate or coach
What are the two sections that the visuospatial sketchpad is divided into?
- Visual cache - holds info about form and colour
- Inner scribe - deals with spatial and movement info
Give a sporting example for the visuospatial sketchpad
The flight of a ball when returning a tennis serve.
Give a sporting example of the use of the episodic buffer
Information about the path of the ball, the sound of the ball on the stick and the position of limbs may help the skill of receiving the ball before starting to dribble in hockey.
What is a limitation of the working memory?
It is difficult to process all the information and may lead to information overload
What is the job of the working memory?
To pick up relevant information from the sporting environment that has been filtered through selective attention.
How many items can the working memory hold?
6-9 items
How long can the working memory hold items for?
30 seconds, which is why selective attention is so important
How does the working memory and LTM link together?
The working memory provides a memory trace which is compared to the information already stored in the LTM.
