Skill continuums Flashcards
Name the 6 skill continua
Simple - Complex
Fine - Gross
Self paced - Externally paced
Open - closed
High - low
Discrete - continuous - serial
Classify an open and a closed skill
Open - performed in an unpredictable environment, the performer must react and adjust to the situation
Closed - performed in a predictable environment, it is identical every time/have set patterns
Classify a simple and a complex skill
Simple - a skill that requires few decisions when being performed.
Complex - a skill that requires decision making using lots of information when performed.
Classify a fine and a gross skill
Fine - precise movements that require high levels of technique and accuracy
Gross - movements that use large muscle groups to produce big, powerful movements.
Classify a self paced and an externally paced skill
Self paced - when the performer controls the start and the speed of the skill
Externally paced - when the performer has no control over the start and speed of the skill
Classify a discrete, a continuous, and a serial skill
Discrete - has a clear beginning and ending
Continuous - The skill has no clear beginning or ending. Each subroutine blends into one another
Serial - a skill that contains several discrete skills in order to make a more integrated movement
Classify a high and a low skill
High - a skill that can’t be broken into parts, due to the speed it is performed at
Low - a skill that can easily be broken into subroutines.
Give an example of a simple skill and a complex skill
Simple - throwing a ball
Complex - Dribbling a hockey ball
Give an example of a fine and a gross skill
Fine - backhand topspin in table tennis
Gross - shoulder muscles used to initiate a tackle in rugby
Give an example of a self paced and an externally paced skill
Self paced - a hammer throw
